Anik Gagnon - Mountain Spring - Acrylic and mixed media on canvas

After a ten-year hiatus, Anik Gagnon has returned to the art world with a revitalized creative vision. While her professional background is rooted in illustration, her evolution has brought her back to the vibrant freedom of abstract fine art.
Anik's initial breakthrough occurred in 2003 when she was accepted into every outdoor art fair she applied for. At the time, her work was defined by a "naïve" style, inspired by American folk art and executed in watercolor. The success of these early exhibitions led to a career in commercial illustration; her work was featured on greeting cards, giftware and home decor. She was represented by American licensing agents. She also published for children's book. During this period, she was in the fine art galleries, balancing watercolor illustrations with acrylic works on canvas.
In 2006, Anik opened a gallery and boutique in Granby, Quebec, showcasing local artisans. However, the dual demands of retail management and commercial contracts eventually stifled her personal inspiration. Recognizing the need for a creative reset, she chose to step away from the industry to rediscover her motivation.
The spark returned during a career transition. Finding herself with the time and space to experiment without external pressure, Anik turned to abstract art. This shift allowed her to rekindle her creative flame through total freedom and authenticity.
Her current practice focuses on "mark-making" using mixed media on canvas to create emotive, colorful abstractions. By honoring intuitive and spontaneous gestures, Anik seeks to recapture the uninhibited creative freedom and innocence found in the compositions of childhood, serving as a contemporary nod to her previous work in illustration
