Rachel Bake is a painter and educator based in London, Ontario. Her work explores the graphic language of the Canadian landscape — bold flat form, layered strata, and atypical colour — translating the physical experience of place into contemporary painting. Raised on the shores of the Great Lakes and shaped by a lifelong relationship with Ontario's distinct ecosystems, Rachel brings an intimate knowledge of regional geography to her studio practice. She paints the specific places she has loved since childhood: Great Lakes shorelines, the Canadian Shield, the Carolinian forests and marshlands of Point Pelee. Her visual language is deeply informed by two decades in the international fashion industry and a decade of freelance textile design, building expertise in colour, form, and visual communication that translates directly into a freehand hard edge technique — executed entirely without tape or mechanical aid. After twenty years away, Rachel returned to painting in 2026, and the body of work that followed moved quickly toward a cohesive, atmospheric voice occupying the space between graphic abstraction and contemporary landscape painting. She teaches fashion illustration and design at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, and spends her summers at the water with her family — passing on the same devotion to place that formed her.
